French in the world

Nowadays more than 40 countries take part in the Sommet des pays francophones every year. French is also one of the seven official languages in the United Nations Organization. It is an official language in several international organizations such as The European Union, The European Council and NATO.

In the world of business, more than 6000 candidates from 90 countries enrol for the CCIP exam (Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris) each year.

French is present in all five Continents. It is the native or second language of 181 million people from the Caribbean to Polynesia and has more than 82 million learners (figures taken from the report by Comité consultatif de la Francophonie, 2002). French is the ninth most spoken language in the world. 75% of the world's French-speaking population lives in Africa, 21% in Europe and 4% in North America.
